Good news for Facebook’s users! Those of us who have accounts with the social media platform have won a pretty special victory. In a recent settlement between Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Facebook users have ended up coming out on top. It’s an interesting story, so let’s take a look a little closer.
A settlement has been reached against Facebook, Inc. over user privacy issues. To receive compensation related to the settlement, you must complete and submit your Claim Form at facebookuserprivacysettlement.con. You must provide the following information to be eligible to receive a payment:
• Claims must be submitted by January 29, 2021
- Name
- Date of birth
- Mailing address
- Email address
You must also certify that you have read the settlement agreement and acknowledge the claims in the settlement. Payments will be given to valid claimants in the following amounts: $50 for time spent, $4 for emails generated, $1 for photos stored, and $3 in total for other claims.
• All payments are subject to a maximum amount of $500
- Any claimants seeking more than $500 must provide additional verification such as agreements, contracts, or other documents to substantiate their claims.
- Payments will be made to valid claimants who submit valid and timely Claim Forms in accordance with the Settlement Agreement and released claims.
As the world’s largest social media network, Facebook will no doubt continue to face scrutiny from both its users and those who wish to protect their personal data. Fortunately, users were able to take action and make their voice heard when their data was mishandled. Thanks to their diligence, Facebook users were able to walk away from this settlement with a victory for their privacy rights.
